Was ask the other day to go down the road a piece to a Loggers yard and pick up some black walnut. Said they were nice logs, just there was no demand at the mill for them and they were too nice to sell for pulp wood. when i got there ,there were 4 black walnut ranging from 16-22 inches on the butt and very straight all 22-25' long. As we got ready to load them he asked me if i wanted a SYP log that the veneer mill had rejected due to a blue stripe from a suspected lightning strike. I measured it at 26" at the butt almost no taper 20'6" long no visible defects. Was well worth going to get. He said now that he knows i want logs he will hold everything that the mills reject for me. woohoo!!! a steady source of logs!! he said if i want, he will stack them off to the side and when he gets a load, if i will pay the driver who lives near me to deliver them he will bring me a truck load at a time. couldn't ask for better than that!!! pics up in a few days when my wife can resize them for me. Ken

That's a score on the black walnut. That stuff seems to hold good value even in bad times. It may be the logs aren't moving but the lumber still has value. A slight uptick in the economy will drive the retail prices of balck walnut lumber back up, and soon after the log prices will pick up some.

Had someone offer us all the free pines logs we wanted today but they are too far away and we're up to our neck in logs allready.

Yeah, i actually didn't need the logs either , i did it mostly as a favor to my logger friend so he can keep his boss (wife) happy. but that favor turned out to be good thing!

Great deal kobraken, I wish I could find a deal like that. I do get my logs free but they are mostly yard logs and have steel in them.

Hey woodbutcher, maybe you should start your own recycling plan. you know, pile all that scrap metal from the logs up and in a few weeks when you get a truck load, sell it for scrap. You just didn't realize how enviromentally conscious you were. Recycling wood and metal. At least it sounds good. I'm lucky in that respect,(knock on wood) all my mill rejects at least go through the metal detectors before i get them. Ken

Here are the pics of the black walnut. The large one in the middle is th eSouthern yellow pine. These are the top ends since the butts are up against the goose neck. Notice my security system guarding my precious walnut.

Looks like a nice score on the logs. That yellow pine is all too familiar around here. What do you plan on doing with it? We are currently using ours for beams and framing lumber for all of our new building projects. Around here that syp grows tall and straight, usually get 2 16' footers and an 8' per log.

Thats what i plan to do with it. I need a fairly large amount of 16' 2x6 for rebuilding to loft of the barn, and i will cut all the 2x4's i can out of it as well. Large pretty ones like this one are getting harder to find, since tree farmers are now planting the "super pines" now. Growth rings are very far apart, seedling to harvest in 12 years. Junk to build with.

:D Hey kobraken, I have a log just like that one, here. However it's a customers log. This one is kinda crooked though. Scales out to about 170BF but I always get more than scale.

Just passed on a 40" SYP from a neighbors yard. Told the guy who came to get it that it was full of metal, but he took it anyway. I remember as a child watching the owner of the tree driving spikes into it to hang things on, a clothesline, , and an assortment of other items. I wonder how it turned out?

 I'd be willing to bet it never got milled. When I run into a birdsnest like that I just put it on the fire. I found that if the person tells you there is no way his logs have steel in them,..... They've been in my back yard all my life. You better break out the metal detector and use it after every pass,  .
