Gambrel vs gable roof? I'm assuming you want a gambrel roof. I delayed responding to this as I'm no expert and I was hoping someone else with experience on this type of roof would post first. So take what I've got to say for what it's worth. I searched the web for gambrel roof calculators. What I fo...

Well I've eaten and give away most of the onions. Here's a shot of what I've got left:
Most are ready for storage.

I've never been able to find water maple listed as an official common name for any of the native maples. But I've heard many around here use water maple as a broad term to cover any maple... I usually couldn't get them to narrow it down to a particular type of maple. So, starting from the top, there...

He got this from a firewood lot. I know it was there for ~6 months. But I don't know how long it was cut before being moved there. I suspect no more than 9 months total. I agree it's pretty wood. But notice the sapwood isn't pearly white. I prefer it freshly felled to get that pearly white but that ...

Sorry, I'm so used to Colorado Potato Beetle problems I just assumed that's what it was. I've seen info on the pest you're talking about but I can't remember where. I can't remember having a problem with them locally. There's two suspects in this document: Home Vegetable Gardening in Kentucky I high...

You were supposed to tell us about all the difficulty you had, how much hair you lost, etc, and that you had to finally resort to getting a witch doctor to whack it with a voodoo stick before it would wo...

Yeah! That's a big'en. And I see no sign of rot in the end.
Watch that root ball. Make sure no one is near the hole as you cut the log free as it may flip back into the hole and bury anyone who's in there.
Quarter sawing it?

If someone had bet me a 4-wheeler could move logs that size safely and reliably 5 years ago I would have lost the bet. They've impressed me. But I still wouldn't get them anywhere near slopes. Looks like you can now do some quick snatch-n-grab jobs. 8) I've wanted one several times for getting fence...

Kinda like those old turnstiles for locomotives - never seen one on a sawmill. Some large bandsaws have a few teeth on the back side for knocking off splinters that may snag the blade on drag back. I understand there's a few large sawmills that have two-sided band blades and can cut in both directio...

A few years ago I picked up some cabbage seedlings at a greenhouse. There was one that looked odd. I gave it to my brother. As it began to mature we mused as to what it might be. Looked like a government experiment gone wrong. I guessed it was kohlrobi - lucky guess. We didn't know when to...

I don't know that much about circle saw speeds. I do know they typically run lower RPMs on larger diameters. Circle saw blades that use carbide inserts require grinding. Some are ground with a special attachment that mounts on the blade and can sharpen it in place. Some of the softer blades that don...

I'm glad no one got hurt. I had to look up the Easter Sunday tornado you were referring to so I could get a timeline. But it turns out Easter Sunday must be a very popular day for tornadoes as I got hits from many different years. I'm not going to answer your question. You can just go on believing I...

I'm gonna make it so that I can just back the mobile unit up to the end of the stationary unit and roll the sawhead right onto the mobile unit. Sounds good anyway we'll see. 8) [/b][/color] I was thinking about that as soon as I read the opening post. All I can say is "I'd like to see you back...
